FAQ / Where is my local social security office?

The Social Security Administration (SSA) manages the United States' social insurance program, consisting of retirement, disability, and survivor's benefits. To qualify for these benefits, most American workers pay Social Security taxes on their earnings, and future benefits are based on these contributions. You can visit the Understanding the Benefits web page for additional information.

For Social Security Disability, the Disability Planner will explain the benefits available, how you can qualify, and who can receive benefits on your earnings record. It will also explain how to apply for the benefits and what happens when your application is approved.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal income supplement program funded by general tax revenues (not Social Security taxes). It is designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people who have little or no income, and it provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter.

You may wish to contact the SSA by phone or mail at:

Phone: 1.800.772.1213

Not all Social Security offices list their phone numbers. You can call 1.800.772.1213 to see if they can provide you with the telephone number you are looking for.

The SSA's Office of International Operations (OIO) is responsible for administering the Social Security program outside the U.S. and for the implementation of the benefit provisions of international agreements. Please visit the SSA's Service Around the World web page for more information. The SSA ensures that individuals have access to public information materials regardless of their ability to communicate in English and provides information in other languages.
