FAQ / Where is my local social security office? The Social Security Administration (SSA) manages the United States' social insurance program, consisting of retirement, disability, and survivor's benefits. To qualify for these benefits, most American workers pay Social Security taxes on their earnings, and future benefits are based on these contributions. You can visit the Understanding the Benefits web page for additional information. For Social Security Disability, the Disability Planner will explain the benefits available, how you can qualify, and who can receive benefits on your earnings record. It will also explain how to apply for the benefits and what happens when your application is approved. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal income supplement program funded by general tax revenues (not Social Security taxes). It is designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people who have little or no income, and it provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter.
