News / Border Patrol Agents in Arizona Seize Marijuana, Arrest 8Wellton, Ariz. – Border Patrol agents assigned to the Wellton, Ariz. station arrested eight suspected smugglers and seized more than $140,000 worth of marijuana Wednesday afternoon.At about 2:30 p.m., agents patrolling the desert near Dateland, Ariz. detected the illegal entry of several individuals. Border Patrol agents tracked the groups’ footprints and discovered two subjects hiding in a culvert under Interstate 8. Another six subjects attempted to flee the area to avoid arrest, but agents quickly tracked them down and arrested them. The suspected smugglers hid six bundles of marijuana in a culvert that that runs underneath Interstate 8. Agents secured the contraband and transported it along with the eight suspected smugglers to the Wellton Border Patrol station. Agents seized six bundles containing 177.27 pounds of marijuana worth an estimated street value of $142,000. Agents discovered another 3.2 ounces of marijuana that two of the subjects had hidden inside their pockets. Border Patrol agents turned the marijuana and the eight suspected smugglers over to the Drug Enforcement Administration. Tracking and signcutting are skills that Border Patrol agents use to enforce Federal laws.
