News / CBP Officers at Dunseith Recover Stolen Vehicle

Dunseith, N.D. - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Dunseith port of entry recovered a stolen vehicle during an export attempt to Canada on Monday. A Canadian man had purchased the utility vehicle through eBay and paid to have the vehicle transported to North Dakota from Murchison, Texas. The vehicle was seized but the “owner/exporter” was not arrested.

CBP officers recovered the 2005 Cushman Truckster which had been reported stolen in Texas. Prior to the export of the vehicle, a routine query was conducted by CBP officers in the National Criminal Information Center which revealed that the vehicle was stolen from Garland, Texas. The Rolette County Sheriff’s Department took custody of the vehicle until it can be transported back to Texas.

The vehicle export inspection process is used to assist in recovering stolen vehicles and serves to keep insurance costs down. The export of all used self-propelled land based vehicles at land border crossings requires that documentation be submitted to CBP at least 72 hours prior to export; and the vehicle must be presented to CBP at the time of exportation.

The National Crime Information Center is a centralized automated data base to share information among law enforcement agencies, including outstanding warrants for a wide range of offenses.
