News / CBP Officers Seize $1.1 Million in Cocaine on Veterans Day at Brownsville, Texas

Brownsville, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Veterans’ International Bridge on this Veterans Day discovered more than $1.1 million in two cocaine seizures hidden within the floors of a Ford Explorer and Honda Accord; two Mexican citizens were arrested.

The first seizure occurred on yesterday at the Veterans’ International Bridge when CBP officers referred a black 2001 Ford Explorer driven by Juan Jose Guzman Escalante, a 36-year-old Mexican citizen and resident of Brownsville, Texas for a secondary inspection. In secondary, CBP officers' use of high-tech tools revealed discrepancies to the floor of the vehicle. CBP officers’ inspection of the SUV resulted in the discovery of a man-made compartment within the rear floor of the Ford.

“Rooster,” a narcotic detector dog, further alerted officers to the odor of narcotics emanating from the Explorer. A non-intrusive imaging system scan indicated anomalies within the floor of the vehicle. An intensive inspection of the area by CBP officers revealed seven packages of narcotics. The seven packages concealed a total of close to 18 pounds of cocaine.

The second load on Veterans’ Day took place at the Gateway International Bridge. CBP officers working primary referred gold 2006 Honda Accord driven by Felipe Olmos Gomez, a 47-year-old Mexican citizen and resident of Tlaxcala, Tamaulipas, Mexico for a secondary inspection. While in secondary, CBP officers conducted an intensified examination of the Honda.

CBP officers’ thorough inspection of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of a man-made compartment hidden under the center consol of the Accord. CBP officers removed six packages of narcotics from within the compartment. The six packages contained a total of nearly 16 pounds of cocaine.

The cocaine from these seizures has an estimated street value of nearly $1.1 million. The drivers were arrested by CBP officers and turned over to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents who investigated the seizures and processed the drivers on federal drug charges.

“Our CBP officers’ interceptions of these loads of dangerous narcotics are a result of the continued enforcement efforts on the frontline in defense of our nation. Our officers and their canine partners prevented these loads of cocaine from entering the U.S. These are great examples of the outstanding work being done by CBP on the border,” said Michael Freeman, CBP port director, Brownsville.
