News / CBP Thwarts Human Smuggling Attempt at Sea

San Diego — The crew of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) marine interdiction vessel stopped a human smuggling attempt off the coast of San Diego netting seven illegal aliens on Sunday afternoon.

A CBP maritime crew comprised of CBP marine interdiction agents and CBP officers, were on routine patrol about three miles off the coast of Point Loma at around 5 p.m., when they spotted a vessel of interest and proceeded to investigate.

The CBP crew encountered the vessel, a red and white 18-foot Chris Craft Cavalier, with seven individuals on board, five females and two males, all with no identification.

U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Coastal Border Enforcement Team (CBET) met the CBP crew at the CBP Dock on Shelter Island in San Diego Harbor to determine the people’s citizenship.

Border Patrol agents determined the seven people were citizens of Mexico attempting to illegally enter the United States. Their ages ranged from 22 to 56-years-old. All were transported to a Border Patrol Station for processing.

An investigation is being conducted to identify and prosecute the individuals responsible for this smuggling attempt. CBP seized the vessel.

The interdiction was part of a coordinated effort by member agencies of the San Diego Maritime Unified Command. The San Diego Maritime Unified Command, comprised of CBP, ICE, the Coast Guard, and other law enforcement partners, is an all-threats multi-agency approach to maritime law enforcement operating in the San Diego and Orange County maritime region.
