News / Citizen of Brazil pleads guilty to federal immigration chargeNEW HAVEN, Conn. - A Brazilian citizen pleaded guilty after an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).Jose Alonso Pereira, 53, a citizen of Brazil last residing in West Haven, Conn., pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful presence in the United States. According to documents filed with the court and statements made in court, on Nov. 17, 1999, Pereira was deported from the United States to Brazil following a September 1998 conviction in Connecticut Superior Court in Milford for assault in the third degree. On Aug. 8, 2000, Pereira was convicted in the Southern District of Florida of illegal reentry following deportation. On Oct. 5, 2000, Pereira was again deported to Brazil. On approximately May 12, 2009, Pereira was found in the District of Connecticut, without having obtained the required permission for reapplication for reentry into the United States after deportation, as required by law. Before reentering the United States, anyone who has been deported must have the express consent of the U. S. Attorney General or the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. Pereira is scheduled to be sentenced on October 16 at which time he faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years and a fine of up to $250,000. http://www.ice.gov/pi/nr/0907/090730newhaven.htm |
