Soon, it won’t be such a hassle to visit the office of the Wayne County Clerk.

Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garrett is opening a satellite office in Northville Township Hall, she said.

“The new Northville Township satellite office will provide a wide array of services including, but not limited to, marriage license applications and birth/death certificates,” Garrett said.

Previously Wayne County residents had to travel to the city/county building in downtown Detroit for that.

The township office will also provide other services, according to Township Clerk Sue Hillebrand, including assumed names and Notary Public certification. The township clerk’s office can already process passport applications, but may soon be able to take the photographs, too, through the Wayne County office.

“We’re still working on that,” Hillebrand said. “We haven’t worked out all the details yet.”

Hillebrand said the she and Garrett have been working on the project for several months. It makes sense on many levels, Hillebrand added. There was unused space in township hall, and the Wayne County Clerks Department will provide the staff members, so township employees won’t have to do additional work.

“We’re really excited to offer these services,” Hillebrand said.
The satellite office will be open during regular township hall hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It will get started with an open house at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25.

Garrett opened a similar office in Westland in March.

“There is a strong demand to give citizens alternative clerk locations,” she said. Since March, the western wayne office has served almost 3,700 citizens from 43 cities and townships.

It may require some adjustment for citizens, though. The county clerk does not accept personal checks or credit cards.
