News / District Man Pleads Guilty in Bank Robbery

WASHINGTON—Timothy Brown, 28, of Washington, D.C., pled guilty today to a federal charge stemming from a bank robbery that took place in August 2010 in Southeast Washington, announced U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr., James W. McJunkin, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI's Washington Field Office, and Cathy L. Lanier, Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

Brown pled guilty to one count of bank robbery at a hearing before the Honorable Judge Richard W. Roberts in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He is to be sentenced on April 7, 2011. He faces a possible sentence of up to 20 years.

According to the government's evidence, at about 10:20 a.m. on August 26, 2010, Brown robbed a Chevy Chase Bank located in the 2800 block of Alabama Avenue SE. Brown approached a teller window and handed the teller a note demanding money. The note also indicated that Brown was armed with a gun. Brown stole $10,449 from the bank.

In announcing the guilty plea, U.S. Attorney Machen, Assistant Director McJunkin and Chief Lanier commended the exceptional investigative work of the FBI/MPD Violent Crime Task Force and MPD Detective Stacey Carey. They also praised the work of the deputy marshals who worked on the case from the United States Marshals Service, as well as members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, which assisted in this investigation. In addition, they thanked legal assistant LaToya Wade, who provided administrative support, and Assistant United States Attorney Barry Wiegand, who assisted with asset forfeiture issues. Lastly, they praised Assistant U.S. Attorney Catherine K. Connelly, who is prosecuting this matter.
