News / IRS helps stimulate economy by helping people file their taxes

Betty J. Mazur is planning to do exactly what President Bush wants her to: Go shopping with the money she receives in May from an economic stimulus package.

"I'm going to buy new clothing with my check," she said. She expects the government to directly deposit a rebate between $300 and $600 into her checking account.

She met Saturday with tax experts at the Saginaw Township Internal Revenuse Service's branch office, 4901 Towne Centre. Officer workers said they helped about 60 people.

The Saginaw Township branch, and 320 others nationwide, opened on Super Stimulus Saturday -- as IRS executives dubbed it -- from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to clear up confusion for those who do not normally file taxes and aid them in receiving their rebate checks, part of the government's economic stimulus package. Experts provided services free of charge.

The IRS has planned a second Super Stimulus Saturday for April 12, with offices open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Starting Monday, the Saginaw Township branch will extend daily hours by an hour, closing at 5:30 p.m. rather than 4:30 p.m. The extended hours will last until Tuesday, April 15, the tax filing deadline.

"When you haven't (filed taxes) in a long time, you forget how," said Betty J. Mazur, 78. A retiree, Mazur lives off Social Security and is not required to file taxes.

Those who are not required to file need at least $3,000 in qualifying income to recieve the rebate. Social Security benefits, veterans' pensions, railroad pensions and combat pay can make up the $3,000.

"It was just around the corner," Mazur said of the office, " and it was simple enough. It was very quick, it didn't even take 10 minutes (to fill out the 1040A tax form)."

Other customers agreed with Mazur that the Saginaw Township's branch being open was convenient and helpful.

"I was surprised they (the IRS) did this service for us seniors," Mazur said. "That they opened their office to help us is great."
