News / Multi-language drivers' license tests challengedA state senator is taking on the Department of Motor Vehicles, challenging their policy of offering drivers' tests in four languages.Senate President Pro-Tem Glenn McConnell says it's against the law, but the DMV is holding its ground. Right now, people can take the test in one of four languages: English, German, French, or Spanish. McConnell says he's considering introducing a bill next year to stop it. McConnell says drivers who don't speak English can't read highway message boards that warn motorists about kidnappings, traffic accidents and hurricane evacuations. Some drivers we spoke with agree. "If I went to Mexico, I would expect to learn Spanish because that is the country's main language. If I move to France, I would expect to learn French. When you come to America, you should learn to speak English," said one driver. "Being that the street signs are in English, I think that the test should be in English," said another. But others disagree. "My first instinct is to say English because that is our official language. However, we are moving rapidly to a multi-cultural society, so I think that the tests should be available to everybody," one driver told NewsChannel 15. "If they can pass the test, then they should be able to drive, whether or not they speak English, Spanish, Latin, whatever," said another. The DMV says it has no plans to stop giving tests in other languages. A spokesman for Governor Mark Sanford says he doesn't see a problem with the DMV offering the test in foreign languages.
