Ontario's transportation minister is "optimistic" the province's new, higher-security driver's licence will have enough features to win U.S. approval as an alternative to a passport for border crossings.

Jim Bradley yesterday unveiled the new cards with a host of high-tech security features designed to foil fraud artists, identity thieves and other criminals.

Before they can be used as a passport alternative, Ontario must strike a deal with the federal government on a way to embed citizenship data on the cards, get clearance on that from the privacy commissioner and wait for the U.S. government to finalize its standards.

About 15,000 of the new licences were issued this week for motorists with cards up for renewal. It will be about a year before citizenship data can be encrypted on them.
