News / New rules imposed on US travellers to CaribbeanThe United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says oral declaration is no longer accepted for American travellers to the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada. In a statement issued here last Thursday, DHS said travellers would now be asked to present authorised documents when entering the United States at land or sea ports. "Travellers who do not present one of the documents listed may be delayed as US Customs and Border Protection officers attempt to verify their identity and citizenship," the statement warned. These documents include a US passport, traveller cards, state or provincial driver's licence, and US military identification with military travel orders. Minors affected too In addition, the statement said effective last Thursday, American citizen children aged 18 and under would be expected to present a birth certificate issued by a federal, state, provincial, county, or municipal authority. "All existing non-immigrant visa and passport requirements will remain in effect and will not b by the changes that were implemented on January 31, 2008," it said. "US lawful permanent residents will be required to present a Permanent Resident Card (I-551) or other valid evidence of lawful permanent residence," it added. Implemented on January 23, 2007, all travellers by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean are required to present a passport or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States. Meantime, the State Department said all US citizens could apply for the "new, limited-use, wallet-size passport card" effective Friday.
