News / Rescue teams rush to scene of deadly UN plane crash in DR Congos capital

4 April 2011 – Fears are mounting for the fate of the 32 people on board a United Nations plane which crashed earlier today as it attempted to land in torrential rain at the main airport in the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The plane had been travelling from the north-eastern city of Kisangani and was trying to land in Kinshasa when it crashed at N’Djili airport, according to a press statement issued by the UN peacekeeping mission in the DRC (known as MONUSCO).

The plane was carrying 29 passengers and three crew members.

MONUSCO has dispatched medical rescue teams to the crash site as well as an emergency team to gather information about the accident.

A spokesperson for the mission told the UN News Centre that some bodies have already been located from the crash site and that the death toll is expected to rise.
