In many states, you can get a document notarized for about the price of an eight-ounce soda. But as businesses and government struggle to bring fraud under control, legislators are recognizing that Notaries should be compensated more than a dollar for their services.

Several states have introduced bills to substantially increase the fees Notaries may charge. Delaware has passed legislation taking effect in February 2009 increasing maximum notarization fees from $5 to $10, and allowing Notaries to charge $25 for eNotarizations. A bill introduced in Rhode Island would increase fees up to $25 per signature.

It doesn’t take long to notarize a document, but signers depend on Notaries to perform their jobs flawlessly. Fairer compensation reflects Notaries’ increased responsibility and professionalism and will help offset the rising cost of applying for a commission.
