News / UN envoy arrives in Iraq to help country in transition to stability9 October 2011 –The newly arrived United Nations envoy to Iraq has begun meeting with senior officials from the country's Government to discuss how the world body can help the Middle East nation rebuild and become more prosperous and stable. Martin Kobler, the Secretary-General's Special Representative for Iraq and head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), arrived yesterday in Baghdad, the capital, to take up his duties. Today, accompanied by senior UN political and humanitarian officials in Iraq, he met Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, stressing that he would try to build on the achievements of his predecessors and provide support for the Government as requested so it can help the country's people. The talks between Mr. Kobler and Mr. Zebari focused on the key challenges Iraq still faces as it moves to become a democratic, stable and prosperous State, according to a press release issued by UNAMI. "We are here to serve the Iraqi people and I am looking forward to working closely with the Iraqi authorities in the fulfillment of the mission's mandate," the Special Representative said. He added that he hoped to work closely with Ira's Council of Representatives, State institutions and civil society, as well as its Government.
