Hard-pressed voters must surely be scratching their heads at the political capital being expended on the driver's license issue, given the many problems confronting them and the state.

Fortunately, a reasonable compromise exists on the driver's license matter that can satisfy both sides: Have foreign passport holders get an International Driver's License instead. Foreigners will then be qualified and in the records without changing the meaning of a New York driver's license

Normally, the IDL is obtained in the home country. But it should not be hard to issue the licenses here. I obtained one in Japan while living there.

With this simple solution to an unnecessary brouhaha, officials and legislators can now give priority to matters the voters elected them for: jobs, easing tax burdens, health care, the environment, public safety, energy, etc.
