FAQ / How can I get a free copy of my credit report?

Normally, the credit reporting agencies (CRAs) may charge you a fee for a copy of your credit report. However, an amendment to the Fair Credit Reporting Act requires each of the CRAs to provide you with a free copy of your credit report once every 12 months.

To obtain a free copy of your credit report, please visit:

Your free credit report may also be requested by phone by calling 1-877-322-8228 or 1-877-730-4104 (TDD).

To request your free credit report by mail, please complete the Annual Credit Report Request Form (.PDF document) and mail it to:

You may also request a free copy of your credit report if a company takes adverse action against you, such as denying your application for credit, insurance or employment. You must request your report within 60 days of receiving notice of the action. The notice will give you the name, address, and telephone number of the CRA that provided the negative information.

You may also be entitled to one free credit report a year if you certify in writing that:

*
You are unemployed and plan to look for a job within 60 days.
*
You are on welfare.
*
Your report is inaccurate because of fraud.

Even if you have not been denied credit, you may want to find out what information is in your credit report. Some financial advisors suggest that you review your credit report periodically for inaccuracies or omissions. This could be especially important if you are considering a major purchase, such as buying a home or a car.

This information and more can be found at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) web page about access to free credit reports.

You may also call the FTC and speak to a representative for assistance.
