NEWS / Corpus Christi P-3 Operations Branch Aids in Cocaine Seizure

Self-Propelled Semi Submersible Captured

Corpus Christi, Texas— An estimated 2.3 metric tons of cocaine was disrupted and an additional 736 kilograms of cocaine were seized from a self-propelled semi submersible (SPSS) off the coast of Liberia, Costa Rica. During a routine patrol, a P-3 from the Corpus Christi Operations Center assisted a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter after it detected the SPSS.

The P-3 crew relieved the USCG helicopter and maintained contact with the SPSS until the USCG vessel could interdict the SPSS. Three individuals were taken into custody and the USCG continued to monitor the area for additional contraband floating on the surface.

The total value of the disrupture and seizure is estimated at more than $83 million.
