NEWS / Criminal Record Haunts California Kidnapping Case

A harrowing tale of a man missing for nearly two weeks has surfaced, shrouded in the ominous shadow of criminal histories. According to prosecutors in Orange County, California, 61-year-old Tony Lam was allegedly tased and kidnapped for ransom by two ex-parolees with a haunting past of robbery and murder.

In a report by the Los Angeles Times, prosecutors argued vehemently against the release of Nhan Nguyen, 49, and Phi Nguyen, 53, from jail, citing the potential danger posed to Lam. Both men, facing a felony count of kidnapping for ransom, have not yet entered a plea.

The court documents revealed a chilling narrative of the events leading to Lam's disappearance. Allegedly followed from a restaurant to his home on Hunter Lane, Lam was accosted in the dead of night, dragged into a waiting car, and subjected to brutal violence. Security camera footage captured the assailant, identified as Nhan Nguyen, assaulting Lam and deploying a Taser on him.

Senior Deputy District Attorney Nicholas Thomo painted a grim picture of the situation, stating, "Law enforcement cannot render aid to the victim because the defendant callously refuses to tell them where he brought the victim. It is unknown if [Lam] is dead or alive."

The Nguyens, entangled in a web of prior criminal offenses, cast a long shadow over the case. Nhan Nguyen, convicted of second-degree murder with a firearm enhancement in 1999, had a violent past that resurfaced in the recent abduction. Phi Nguyen's history, marked by multiple incarcerations since 1996, only deepened the gravity of the situation.

Thomo's assessment of the Nguyens was stark: "Nhan Nguyen is a violent, dangerous gangster," he declared, underscoring the chilling nature of the crime.

The search for Lam, meanwhile, persists. Described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing about 145 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes, he was last seen wearing a dark shirt and blue jeans. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Orange County Sheriff Dispatch or Orange County Crime Stoppers anonymously.
