NEWS / Essex County Woman Sentenced to State Prison for Possessing at Least 10 Grams of Angel Dust

TRENTON - Attorney General Paula T. Dow and Criminal Justice Director Stephen J. Taylor announced that an Essex County woman was sentenced today to state prison for possessing phencyclidine, commonly known as PCP or “angel dust,” which she intended to distribute last June.

Stephanie Afonso, 22, of Newark, was sentenced to six years in state prison, with 36 months of parole ineligibility, by Superior Court Judge David H. Ironson in Morris County. The sentence was based on Afonso’s Nov. 20 guilty plea to possession of PCP with intent to distribute.

In pleading guilty, Afonso admitted that on June 4, 2009, she possessed at least 10 grams of PCP, a hallucinogen, which she intended to distribute. An undercover investigation determined that Afonso intended to distribute the PCP from her home. Afonso was arrested on June 4, 2009 after members of the Division of Criminal Justice executed a search warrant at her residence.

Detective Louis Renshaw and Deputy Attorney General Richard Queen coordinated the investigation. Queen prosecuted the case and represented the Division of Criminal Justice at the sentencing.
