The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), like many Notaries today, is using electronic fingerprinting to protect airline travelers.

In a program to safeguard air travelers from impostors, terrorists and identity thieves, DHS is taking fingerprints from visitors at airports such as George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston; Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport; and Boston’s Logan International Airport.

Department officials take a set of 10 prints electronically from all non-U.S. citizens between the ages of 17 and 49 travelling through the airport. The prints are then checked against a watch list of suspected criminals, terrorists and immigration violators.

Electronic fingerprinting helps prevent dangerous people from entering the United States and also protects legitimate visitors from possible identity theft, said Paul Morris of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Notaries Public have recently begun using electronic fingerprints as well. Electronic journals such as Enjoa® allow Notaries to scan in a signer’s thumbprint or fingerprint for a journal entry, which helps deter fraud.
