NEWS / Michigan requires universal background checks for purchase of firearms

The State of Michigan now requires anyone purchasing firearms to undergo a universal background check. Additional security requirements are also imposed on individuals storing guns at home. The relevant bills were signed into law by Governor Gretchen Whitmer on April 13, exactly 2 months after a fatal shooting on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, which resulted in 4 deaths (included the suicide of the perpetrator). The first law requires anyone without a gun license purchasing a firearm to undergo a federal national instant criminal background check. The second law requires gun owners with minors to store their guns in a locked container or to use a locking device that would prevent anyone other than the owner or authorized user from using it. Violations of the new regulations could be punishable by 93 days in prison, a fine of up to $500, or both. “Universal background checks will help keep guns out of the hands of violent criminals, domestic abusers and people on terrorism watch lists and no-fly lists,” Governor Whitmer was quoted by ABC News as saying, “Responsible gun owners will tell you—you listen to them—they will tell you how important it is to keep your guns locked up in your home. It is about protecting your children and your family.” The previous law only required background checks for the purchase of pistols, but not long guns or shotguns, which Governor Whitmer was quoted as saying “doesn’t make any sense”.
