NEWS / Indian double murderer charged with falsifying wife’s death certificate

An Indian man currently serving a 30-year prison sentence for killing his wife and daughter has been charged with falsifying his wife’s death certificate and defrauding her life insurance company into paying him 270,000 Indian rupees (approximately $5,180). Five other people are also accused of taking part in the scheme.

Prakash Shingnapure was originally arrested by police in Nagpur, a city in south-western India, two years ago, when he was found trying to stab himself to death after apparently killing his wife and teenage daughter. He was sentenced to death, but the court later commuted the sentence to a 30-year prison term, The Times of India reports.

Several months later, Life Insurance Corporation, the life insurance provider of Shingnapure’s late wife, filed a complaint, accusing Shingnapure and five other people of falsifying her death certificate and illegally receiving the life insurance payment.

Police now say that Shingnapure managed to procure the fake death certificate while he was undergoing treatment for his self-inflicted stab wounds. The certificate apparently listed the cause of death as cardiac arrest instead of murder, and was submitted to the insurance office shortly after the double murder. The insurance amount was said to have been distributed equally among the alleged perpetrators.
