NEWS / Teen Caught With $30,000 of Marijuana at Arizona Border Entry

Douglas, Ariz. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers stopped an apparent drug-smuggling attempt Wednesday when they seized an ice chest that contained approximately 20 pounds of marijuana.

CBP officers were screening travelers at about 8 p.m. when they became suspicious of a 17-year-old male driving a 2001 Crown Victoria. The boy was identified as a resident of Tucson, Ariz. A CBP K-9 Narcotics Detection Team searched the vehicle. The K-9 showed a strong interest in the ice chest full of food, sitting on the back seat of the Crown Victoria.

The CBP officers suspected that the ice chest contained more than just food. Using high-tech X-ray machine, the CBP officers discovered that the sides of the ice chest were loaded with packages of marijuana. Approximately 20 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of $30,000 was removed from the ice chest.

CBP seized the vehicle and marijuana. The suspect was held for further questioning and released to his custodial parent.
