The United Arab Emirates will be streamlining the process for getting married in the country. Individuals will be able to order marriage certificates online and sign official wedding documents using videoconferencing technology.

The service, which is to be provided by the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, was exhibited at the GITEX 2023 held at the Dubai World Trade Center, Time Out Abu Dhabi reports.

The whole process would start with an online marriage certificate application, which involves getting approval for the marriage and making the necessary payments. Once that is done, individuals would be able to set up an appointment to sign their marriage contract remotely over videoconferencing software.

The new e-marriage procedure follows the adoption of a new marriage and divorce law governing non-Muslim UAE expats, and governs not only matrimony, but also procedures for child custody, inheritances, wills, and proof of paternity.

Civil marriage contracts must meet a set of requirements, including both parties being over 21 years of age as well as a declaration from to be completed in front of a judge.

The law allows for no-fault divorces, with one party having the right to initiate divorce proceedings without having to justify their actions. Child custody is given to both parties equally by default, but one party can petition the court to bar the other parent from having custody if that is in the best interests of the child.
